Farmers markets Back

What are farmers markets?

Farmers' markets aim to put local consumers in contact with local producers selling fresh, quality, local produce at a fair price. This type of market is not new - it was the traditional way for farm produce to be bought and sold in the UK. However, in recent years traditional street markets have seen a change away from local fresh produce to wholesale products and supermarket reject goods. In addition many consumers have switched to shopping at out-of-town supermarkets and USA style shopping malls.

Farmers' markets are one part of the local food links initiative that aims to counter these changes and bring the consumer and producer of food back in contact with each other in a traditional English fashion. Markets are organised at the national level by The National Association of Farmers Markets. Other benefits of farmers' markets include, encouraging organics, reducing food miles, making better use of inner city locations, reducing packaging and waste as well as supporting agricultural diversification. All of which have beneficial environmental and social effects .

Farmers' markets also often include festival and music events helping to create an atmosphere that is vibrant and fun, making shopping a sociable and enjoyable activity.
